The Writers’ Guild of South Africa is proud to announce the inaugural ‘Great Idea’ Competition. South African screenwriters are invited to submit an original idea for one (or as many as they wish) of the following categories:
- A 90 minute motion picture
- A prime time family drama series
- A prime time comedy series
This is not an easy competition. It is aimed at the professional performance writer and designed to find top class local content with strong international sales appeal. To throw the net as wide as possible, ideas may also be submitted by “non-writers”, but they have to team up with a professional writer to qualify for entry.
The writer of the WINNING entry in every category will receive a DEVELOPMENT DEAL with the Skills Lab of the WGSA. This includes the development of a sales bible and a script sample, which the writer will create under the guidance of professional WGSA trainers. The completed project will be marketed on behalf of the writer to funding organisations, independent South African producers as well as the commissioning editors of the different broadcasters by WGSA in conjunction with The Script Shop, an independent script agency.
The TOP FIVE entries in every category will EACH receive a FREE LOGLINE for a year in The SCRIPT SHOP CATALOGUE, which is published and distributed quarterly to all funders, producers and commissioning editors in South Africa by THE SCRIPT SHOP agency.
The OVERALL WINNER, chosen from the three category winners, will be based on originality, cost efficiency and entertainment value, and will win the latest version of Final Draft Screenwriting Software on top of all the other prizes.
